OBITUARY - Hugh C. Gray, Honorary President, E.K.L.O.C.
When a small group of enthusiasts called an open meeting in the Murray Community Centre in 1957 to guage the interest there might be in the new town of East Kilbride for a Light Opera Club, Hugh was one of those enthusiasts.
He performed in the first enterprise - a revue - "September Song - in April 1957, he was a "Riff" in our very first full blown production - "The Desert Song" - and was again persuaded to tread the boards to play the part of the "Heavenly Friend" in "Carousel" in 1968.
Hugh was the Club's first Secretary, then Vice-president, President, Honorary Vice-President and, finally, in 1976, our Honorary President.
He was, when his busy schedule allowed, often involved with the Club, hearing about, and visiting some of our rehearsals and working "front of house" for many years.
Patrons will remember his tall, welcoming figure in the foyer of Duncanrig School and, more recently, the Village Theatre.
He was still greatly interested in the Club even when he retired and moved to West Kilbride.
Hugh died on 28th January, 2001. His passing will be a great loss to the Club.
