The Cast
Anything Goes - Synopsis

cover of programme

Anything Goes is a delightfully light-hearted 30s musical which we trust will banish, if only for a few hours, the stresses and strains of the present An assortment of characters sing "Bon Voyage" - characters only found in the make believe world of Musical Comedy. They set sail on a sea of melody and mirth aboard the S.S. American, the setting of "Anything Goes", for a Song and Dance Cruise destined to transport you on a wave of nostalgia, back to the "Thirties". We invite you to journey with us on this voyage of nautical nonsense, awash with some of the most exhilarating music and lyrics by that master of his craft, Cole Porter.

Recognised as a classic of Musical Theatre, Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" was first presented in New York in 1934 where the reviews were enthusiastic the critics reserving their highest accolades for the show's music and lyrics The revival of the show in 1962 had audiences and critics again revelling in the altogether unlikely plot and the Cole Porter songs, seemed doubly inspired. Classics such as "I Get a Kick out of You", "Friendship", "It's Delovely", "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" and the toe-tapping title song with their risque, pungent wit and glorious melodies are as up to date as when they were first penned.

Anything Goes was given an off Broadway production in 1962 - nearly thirty years after the New York premier. This version was subsequently presented by Sir Cameron Mackintosh in London in 1969 with Marion Montgomery in the role originally played by Ethel Merman.

Although the show was revived again on Broadway in 1987 with Pattie Lapor and subsequently staged in 1987 at the Prince Edward Theatre where Elaine Paige took the leading role of Reno, we of E.K.L.O.C. have decided to present the 1962 revised version of the show which hasn't been performed so often by amateurs. A new production is currently enjoying considerable success at the Royal National Theatre in London.
