The Cast of Guys and Dolls 2002

The Cast
GUYS AND DOLLS - Synopsis

cover of programme The story of "Guys and Dolls" is the story of some of the gangsters and racketeers who frequented the shadier parts of New York. These characters are led by Nathan Detroit, who, with his sidekicks, Nicely-Nicely Johnson and Benny Southstreet are desperate to find somewhere to hold their next crap game. Nathan's fiancee, Adelaide, hates the crap game almost as much as Lt. Brannigan, who tries to foil Nathan's efforts.
Sister Sarah Brown of the Save-a-Soul Mission is trying to get the gamblers to lead better lives but is finding it hard going and the Mission is under threat of closure. Sky Masterson, the renowned womaniser and gambler is in town and Nathan needs $1000 to hire Joey Biltmore's garage for the crap game. In an attempt to get the money he bets Sky $1000 that he cannot take a "doll" of Nathan's choosing to Havana. Sky thinks he is on a cert until Nathan chooses Sarah as the "doll"! Sky uses his charm and persuades Sarah to go to Havana, promising to provide twelve sinners for the Mission. Meanwhile, the guys have been using the Mission in her absence, and everything is spoiled when Lt. Brannigan raids the Mission.

Act II opens at the Hot Box Night Club where Adelaide and her Hot Box dancers entertain the customers. Nathan, having just lost his bet with Sky, is forced to hold the crap game in the only place left - the sewer! Trouble develops between the "Guys" and a high roller - Big Jule. However, Sky arrives and offers to play dice with the men. If he loses, they each get a thousand bucks - if they lose, they must attend the midnight prayer meeting at the Mission. Sky wins and the "Guys" attend the meeting and the Mission is saved. Adelaide and Sarah meet by chance and decide on a strategy to get their Guys and a happy ending is in sight.

Here is Bill Stubbs' review of the show from Noda Scotland News (May 2002 edition)

The tone of the evening was set by Nicely-Nicely, Benny and Rusty Charlie and it just got better and better, David Maule, Robert Kirkham and Ronnie McPhee maintaining their characters with great confidence. The same high quality of performance was evident throughout the very talented cast. Frances Taylor was quite outstanding as Sarah Brown, and Peter King was a sympathetic Arvide Abernathy. Sky Masterton was played with great authority by Craig Lundie, his and Sarah's solos and duets being highlights of this show of many highlights. Tom Johnston (Nathan Detroit) and Claire Johnston (Miss Adelaide) were simply superb in everything in which they were involved. Adding to the overall entertainment were the performances of Robbie Crawford (Harry the Horse), Peter Nevans (Lt. Brannigan), Carole Alston (General Cartwright) and Peter Blair (Big Jule). The Guys and Dolls did nothing to rock the boat, while the Hot Box girls added that touch of glamour to a production of which the team can be rightly proud.
