The Cast
The Story of "The Sound Of Music"

cover of programme The Sound of Music is a family musical not only by reason of its homely appeal, but because it is a real family with emphasis on the children - they being the five daughters and two sons of Captain Georg von Trapp, a widower.
Maria is sent to fill the post of governess to the family by the Mother Abbess after the Sisters, Berthe, Margaretta and Sophia voice their doubts as to her suitability for the religious life. She is more than a little apprehensive prior to her first contact with the Captain and his family and even more so after meeting them. However, Maria's charm and love of singing soon win over the children and after a time the Captain. Indeed the Captain's attitude to the children undergoes quite a change and to some extent his feelings towards Maria - a fact which does not pass unnoticed by Elsa with whom the Captain believes himself in love. The success of the children's singing at the party encourages Max to try to persuade the Captain to let them take part in the Folk Festival but the Captain will not give his permission. Brigitta accuses Maria of being in love with her father. Maria decides to return to the Abbey. Her departure affects the children badly - but the Mother Abbess prevails upon Maria to return to the family. Harmony is restored, but Elsa, realising it would be a mistake to insist upon marrying the Captain, bids farewell and the Captain asks Maria to marry him. After the wedding and the return from the honeymoon the Anschluss has taken place and the Nazi influence really begins to affect the family. In order to escape from an unacceptable situation the Captain agrees to the family taking part in the Festival. Their appearance there leads to their escape to freedom aided and abetted by the Mother Abbess and the nuns.

The Sound Of Music - History of the Show

The Sound of Music was the last of the five great musicals by the partnership of Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rogers. The musical is based on the true story of the Trapp Family Singers who escaped the German occupation of their home country Austria. The award winning musical opened at the Lunt-Fontaine theatre in New York in November, 1959, where it ran for almost fout years, toured for three years and established new records in London with an outstanding five and a half year's run at the Palace Theatre. There ewas to be a further triumph ahead, one which Oscar hammerstein would never see - he died four months after the Broadway opening - it was, of course the 1965 film version starring Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Captain von Trapp. The Oscar winning move is without doubt the most successful celluloid version of any stage musical. The enormous success of the film stopped any new professional production of the show for almost 20 years, however only last year a lavish new presentation was staged, to much acclaim, on Broadway. So popular is the film and so well known are the songs that a "Sing-a-long" version version has been enjoying amazing success in London and more recently in Edinburgh where audiences are strongly encouraged to don a wimple or anything creative made of old curtains. East Kilbride Light Opera Club first presented the show in 1978 when Nan Tait was our Maria and Len Johnson was our Captain von Trapp.
